MP's Broncos Update

Former NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle convinced "all the league's owners to adopt revenue sharing, arguably the most successful form of socialism in U.S. history. The reason the NFL is so dominant is because the NFL is basically Marxist. This was Rozelle's greatest coup, and everybody knows it. But you'd never guess that from watching the NFL Network. Marxism is not a talking point." -Chuck Klosterman

Regarding McDaniels/Profanity-gate: I don't think the guy should have apologized for anything. He didn't say anything unreasonable in the circumstances; in fact he didn't say anything that I haven't said at my job (which is moderately comparable). I think he apologized because he is a caring parent, which is a good thing, but I hope he doesn't change his ways. I like his fieriness.

Why do the Broncos suck so much?

It's a question that has a lot of bearing on the rest of the season. The Broncos suckage has reached epic proportions. The Raiders are barely capable of beating the West High School football team, yet somehow the Broncos barely eaked out a win yesterday. And when I say eaked, I mean it. The Broncos won because the refs made a bad call on what should have been Plummer's 4th interception. I'm not one to complain. The Raiders are the Broncos' arch-enemies. A win in Oakland is always welcome. But the Broncos consider themselves Super Bowl material, and right now that's a big load of crap.

You are not a Super Bowl contender if you win on a blown call. You are not a Super Bowl contender if your quarterback is named Jake Plummer. You are not a Super Bowl contender if you play like the Broncos did on Sunday.

But there is some good news. You just might be a Super Bowl contender if you have Javon Walker on your team. You just might be a Super Bowl contender if Champ Bailey anchors your secondary. You are a Super Bowl contender if your defense keeps teams from scoring. You are a Super Bowl contender if Mike Shanahan is your head coach.

The Broncos are running out of time to make things right. They've put on a great facade for 9 games, but now it's time to take off the mask and fix the problems. Problem #1 - An innacurate quarterback. Jake needs to figure things out now. Shanahan should have pulled him from the Raiders game. His decision-making was horrific. It doesn't matter if the run-game isn't working - you can't throw behind a receiver into double-coverage. I've been to some West High games this year, and at least those kids have figured it out. They aren't as athletic as Plummer, but their IQ's are higher. I hate to say it, but Cutler should have been put in the game. Shanahan missed his chance to teach Plummer a lesson, and now the Broncos are stuck with a shaky QB and three division games out of the next four on the schedule. The next four games will decide the Broncos fate. They need to win 3 of them (preferably against opponents in the division). If they go .500 or worse, the season is done.

The main excuse when argueing against making a QB switchero to your younger less experienced backup is that even if it provides a spark in the short term, what happens when the games really matter and the proven guy is not out there taking the heat. Anyone who believes it does not provide a spark should look at the success of backup QB's this season who now start. Romo, Huard, Wallace, Garrard, Young, hell I would even throw Harrington and Batch on the list, this year is the year of the backup QB. Now most purists would argue though all of those guys have contributed wins- none will lead their team to a superbowl victory this year. . . and they would be right, but none can shoulder that responsibility themselves- all play for teams whose other weaknesses keep them from glory. The Broncos are weakness free, the weakness begins and ends in Jake, the only other real weakness I will get into in a minute. Jake is no threat to anyone. Opposing defences and D-Coordinators are hampering the broncos running ability because they know that Jake can not win the game. This year has the potential for no thousand yard back, and the only blame can go to Jake. Javon Walker is keeping Plum in a job, much to my chagrin. I could have thrown to Walker for the yards and TD's he has gotten this year, and I cant throw the ball twenty yards with any kind of accuracy, course neither can Jake. Walker might be the best reciever in the league, but with the worst QB we will never know. Plummer has a ridiculous starting record under Shanny, the kind that anyone can point to and say "see, thats why" and it is hard to argue. Anyone watching games this year though is well aware that not a one win should be given to Jake for what he brought to the table. We win despite him, and I am sure that we could win despite Jay just as well. What does Cutler bring? An opportunity to win those games the rest of the team and the ever brilliant Mike Shannahan can't. "Well he is completely unproven, he has no big game experience." Very true, but name a big game Plum has won for us. . .

Oh the other big Weakness I spoke of above is punting. It was cute to cut Sauerbrun, the bad boy, and keep the cheap kid who was playing above his head. It had feel good written all over it. Why add stress to a happy lockeroom? Why put up with stunts from a guy who is barely a real football player, and makes millions to kick the ball, when Shanny doesn't put up with crap from anyone else? Becuase in todays NFL field position is everything, and when your feeble replacement punter shanks two in a game you are fighting just to survive against the most mediocre of the mediocre. Whether you like him or not, whether Mike likes him or not, Todd was a huge piece of last years success and without him we are going to be fucked when every yard matters. He is as good as it gets, still a free agent, and wants nothing more than to be back in the blue and oarnge. Keeping Paul over Todd was the worst decision of the year.
